Seiko Men's Watch SLL001 Review

This is a very nice looking watch. It does not have all the dials and gizmos that 'pilot' type watches have; its technology is hidden inside. It is accurate, I lost/gained maybe four or five seconds per month. The calendar keeps track of every month up to 2130 including leap years! It looks much more expensive that it really is. I rather like the little magnifier over the date display.

As with the good, there must be some bad. (Hence the three star review) The band is a little thin, it is marked made in China while the watch itself is made in Japan. If you have hairs on your wrist, it will pull them out from time to time. The battery is rated for ten years, mine lasted a little over eight. I went to several local watch repair shops to get a new battery. I figured it would be simple enough. The back to the watch screws off so it is easy to get to the quarter sized lithium replaced. Turned out to be not so easy...

That leads to the next problem; the battery is an odd one. None of my local watch repair shops, jewelery shops or department stores have one in stock. The last watch repair guy, an honest to goodness Seiko authorized dealer, suggested we send it down to the Seiko repair shop in Southern California. It wouldn't take more than three weeks round trip and should cost between $15 to $25 dollars including shipping. Cool!

Well, a month later, the Seiko repair shop called with a quote to "fix" the watch; $285.00!!! Apparently, when this watch has its battery changed, it also needs a replacement capacitor (even though it is not a Kinetic type watch), new gasket and pressurization. (Pressurization??) I mean I do like the watch, but for that price I can nearly by two more from Amazon.

I declined to have them do the work and the watch was promptly returned all put back together in a nifty little box. Kudos to Seiko for that!

In its place I bought the Seiko Five 21 jewel automatic wind mechanical watch. Looks very similar to this one and will never, ever need a battery!!
