The SNKE59 is one model among hundreds of entry-level Seiko 5 automatic watches. Most of them are smaller than today's fashionable size, which gives them a 1950s look. They sell for $60 or $70 online. They are "automatic" (self-winding) mechanical watches with 21 and 23 jewel movements. They are well made and accurate, and reliable if not stressed beyond their design limits.The SNKE59 has a green dial -- not my favorite color, but it looks great with the old "Army Green" service uniform (ASU) which is being phased out for "dress blue." The SNKE57 has a white dial, SNKE63 has a black dial, and SNKE61 has a blue dial. Except for dial color, these watches are identical. The case is 38mm in diameter, a little larger than most Seiko 5 watches; it is stainless steel (no doubt 316L) with a glass case back so you can watch the little wheels turning when you get tired of watching paint dry. The case is fully polished except for the top of the lugs, which are brushed. It has standard lugs for a 20mm bracelet or strap, which is also a little larger than most Seiko 5 watches. Its folded link steel bracelet is wearable and I've seen worse, but this watch looks much better on leather strap or even on a nylon NATO strap. 20mm is a popular size and you have many choices for a replacement.
The dial has three large Arabic numbers and eight large bar markers, rather like an old Rolex Explorer, but it is more "inspired by" than an "homage" (copy). No one will mistake it for a Rolex, but it shares one important detail with the 1950s Explorer: its numbers and bar markers are printed on the dial with a thick coat of luminous paint. Compare a very popular Seiko 5, the Seiko Men's SNK809 Seiko 5 Automatic Black Canvas Strap Watch, where the old-fashioned leaf-shaped hands and the ball at the end of the second sweep are lumed, but the dial's only lume is on little dots outside the minute numbers. Seiko has the best luminous paint in the industry, and after exposure to a good light source, those little dots will be visible through several hours of darkness. In comparison, the SNKE59 glows like a diver watch. I own watches with weaker lume which cost twice as much.
A small window at 3 o'clock shows the date and day of the week (English or Spanish) in black on white, except for Saturday and Sunday which are blue and red respectively. Black numbers on white are not as elegant as white numbers printed on black, but they are easier to read.
The self-winding movement cannot be hand wound, and the second hand cannot be paused or "hacked" when setting the watch. That is typical in this price range.
Seiko rates the SNKE59 for 30 meters water resistance. Please understand that 30 meters does not mean 30 meters underwater. Seiko designed the water seals to withstand 3 atmospheres or "3 bar" pressure. The watch industry is convinced that its customers cannot understand atmospheres or bars, except for the kind with swinging doors. I am not a cultural historian, and I do not know when or how 3 atmospheres turned into 30 meters: but believe me, if you wore this watch on a 100 foot dive, you would not return with a working watch. This is what the industry's water resistance numbers mean:
30 meters/3 atmospheres/3 bar = splash resistant: good for a spilled drink and hand washing, but it might not survive dishwashing.
50 meters/5 atmospheres/5 bar = sprinkle resistant: wear it in the shower or in a driving rain.
100 meters/10 atmospheres/10 bar = immersion resistant: wear it swimming but not off a high board.
200 meters/20 atmospheres/20 bar = diving resistant: scuba diving to the usual depth of 30 or 40 feet, and perhaps to 100 feet or a little deeper to examine a wreck.
The SNKE59 looks good with sport clothes, but it is not a suitable timepiece for any sport where you might go into the water. It looks great with the old Army dress uniform, but it is not meant to be worn in the field: for that, buy a G-Shock or an Ironman.
I knocked off one star for the folded link bracelet and 3 bar water resistance. This is a great watch for the price and I plan to buy another. It takes me back to my childhood in the 1950s, and it doesn't cost any more than a soulless quartz watch with a plastic case.
